However, experts emphasize that both sweeteners are nutritionally similar, offering no significant health benefits (aka "empty calories"). Both are added sugars, contributing to weight gain, Type 2 diabetes, and heart disease when overconsumed. High-fructose corn syrup has slightly more fructose, linked to inflammation, but the FDA and AMA find no safety differences. Limiting added sugars is always recommended.
