If you're receiving Social Security payments, I've got good news: Your Social Security checks will keep coming during the federal government shutdown. More than 74 million Americans receiving Social Security, SSDI, and SSI payments can expect their benefits on schedule.
However, services will be reduced. The Social Security Administration is furloughing about 6,000 of its 51,000 employees. While local offices remain open for essential services like benefit applications, appeals, and address changes, you won't be able to get proof of income letters, earnings record corrections, or Medicare card replacements during the shutdown.
One potential hiccup: The 2026 cost-of-living adjustment announcement could be delayed if the shutdown affects the October 15 consumer price index data release. Current estimates suggest a 2.7% to 2.8% increase, which would boost the average retirement benefit by roughly $54 monthly.
The SSA encourages beneficiaries to use their online My Social Security accounts to access information and services during this period. And if you've never set up your Social Security website account, this is the perfect excuse!
