A recent survey by Natixis Investment Managers asked 700 investors with at least $100,000 in their portfolio what they expected the stock market's long-term average return would be. How about you? Do you have a return in mind?
Respondents in this particular survey expect stock returns of +15.6% above inflation(!), not just in the year ahead but over the long term. You can see from the chart below the long-term stock market returns (as measured by the S&P 500) floated between 10-12%, including inflation.
With today's popular tv shows like Fast Money and smartphones pushing alerts on the day's biggest movers, it's easy to see why expectations deviate so much from reality. However, an investor's best quality is arguably patience.

It seems that I’m behind the times. Like hybrid or electric vehicles, beds have also changed, and new versions are gaining popularity. Box springs are now considered outdated. Springs in mattresses are becoming outdated, too, being replaced with mattresses made exclusively of latex or memory foam. Latex and memory foam mattresses are much heavier and require a strong, rigid base that will support not only the weight of the mattress but also your body and varying indentations over long periods of time. Therefore, the omission of box springs for alternatives like platform beds, wooden foundation, and adjustable beds are required to get the most benefit from latex and memory foam mattresses and to make them last longer. In the past, a box spring was the bed base that served as a barrier between your mattress and the bed frame. It was up of a wooden or metal box with coils inside, all covered in breathable fabric. Its purpose was to extend the life of your mattress by absorbing some of the
weight shocks and providing more support. It also added more height to your bed. Of course, if you have an antique bed or an innerspring mattress, box springs are still ideal.

I believe one of the best advancements in recent technology is GPS (Global Positioning System) which enables us to get quickly and, for the most part, accurately from one destination to another. No longer do we have to plan our trips by writing down turn-by-turn directions using paper maps that are so big that they span the entire hood of your car or are placed in thick spiral notebooks where you have to make sure that you accurately align the correct next page to the streets.
