This decision ends months of guesswork in the financial markets over one of the world’s most important economic policy posts. Mr. Powell is expected to win bipartisan Senate confirmation.
Administration officials said the president’s decision reflected a desire to maintain stability at the central bank amid public concerns about high prices for everything from groceries to fuel.
