All-in-one retirement homes or continuing care retirement communities (CCRCs) are long-term care options for older people who want to stay in the same place through different phases of their aging process. Currently, there are about 1,900 CCRCs nationwide, and growing due to demand. The chief benefit of CCRCs is that they provide a wide range of care, services, and activities in one place, offering residents a sense of stability and familiarity as their abilities or health conditions change. However, these communities come at a high monetary cost, starting with an initial payment, then monthly maintenance or service fees. In researching CCRCs, check out location, staff, housing, residents, meals, health care services, personal services, social activities, and recreation. Also, check posted inspection reports for the nursing home component. Lastly, ensure you understand the contract, which comes in 3 basic types: extensive life-care – Type A; modified – Type B; or fee-for-service – Type C.
