If September ended with a thud, then October started with a bang. Markets kicked off with the S&P 500 logging its biggest two-day rise since April 2020 before giving back much of those gains later in the week on the back of a strong jobs report. The September Employment Report reflected continued strength in the labor market, stoking concerns about continued aggressive rate hikes from the Fed.
In addition, OPEC+ announced a production cut of 2 million barrels per day starting in November. This announcement sent oil prices rising 17% and the S&P 500 energy sector up almost 14%.
Inflation and corporate earnings will continue to stay in focus, with both getting big data points later this week.
