RMD stands for Required Minimum Distribution, the minimum amount of money that owners of retirement plans and IRAs must withdraw annually from their accounts. The IRS requires RMDs to begin when account owners reach their required beginning date, which is usually age 73, but moves to 75 in 2033.
RMD rules and calculations can be confusing, and the SECURE Act 2.0 didn’t simplify things. This quick reference guide can help review the timing of your first RMD, aggregation rules, calculating RMDs, and strategies to reduce RMDs.
Remember that the penalty for not taking your full RMD is a whopping 50%! That's for all years, not just your first, so keep the attached age charts handy.

According to Rick Steves, nearly all crimes tourists suffer are nonviolent and avoidable. This includes the easiest and biggest number of tourist crimes: pickpocketing. Because European cities are popular destinations, pickpocketing crime has increased in these areas. (Pickpocketing is also increasing in US cities.) Some of the worst incidences of pickpocketing are being reported in Italy, with destinations such as the Trevi Fountain, the Pantheon, and the Colosseum Duomo di Milano being top spots since crowds are wall-to-wall there, making pickpocketing theft easier. Travel experts suggest using anti-theft accessories like money belts, cross-body bags, or medium-sized totes. Items of value, like electronics, expensive jewelry, and important documents, should be left in the hotel safe when out and about. If you experience pickpocketing, go to the local police department to file a report. Here’s a top 10 list of tourist hotspots with the most pickpocketing mentions as of April 2024.

Summer weather heralds the incoming cornucopia of flowers, leaves on trees, fresh vegetables, and a myriad of other plants. It makes walking in a grassy park or hiking much more enjoyable. However, beware of the downsides of the growth of nefarious plants, such as poison ivy. Never mind the doom of actually touching your bare skin to the itchy plant, did you know that the sticky oil produced by poison ivy called urushiol can stay on fabric, like your clothes or shoes, for 1 to 5 years--even if your clothing touched a dead poison ivy plant? To prevent further or even later spread, you can have the exposed clothing dry cleaned, or, as a cheaper alternative, you need to carefully (wear gloves) put the exposed clothing in the washing machine on the hottest cycle for the longest period. That’s it. Consider yourself poison ivy sanitized, and be careful where you go among plants.
