** Your Money
------------------------------------------------------------
When it comes to long-term savings, there are three general types of savings accounts, each with a different nuance around taxes. Here’s a quick summary of the three:
* Taxable Accounts - You pay taxes on earnings (interest, dividends, capital gains) in the year you earn them. No special tax benefits, but you may be able to offset income with losses.
* Tax-Deferred Accounts - You contribute pre-tax money (or deduct contributions), and you don’t pay taxes on earnings until you withdraw the money (e.g., Traditional IRA, 401(k)).
* Tax-Free Accounts - You contribute after-tax money, but earnings and withdrawals are tax-free if certain conditions are met (e.g., Roth IRA, Roth 401(k), some HSAs and 529 plans).
In my opinion, it's nice to have some investments in each so you can optimize where money comes from when you need it, keeping the tax impact of each new dollar in mind. Here's one family's quest to have a tax-free retirement by aiming for a 100% Roth portfolio.
