Your Money

On Wednesday, Fed Chairman Jerome Powell announced the central bank will aggressively dial back its bond-buying and sees three interest rate hikes next year. This was clearly telegraphed and widely expected.

There's just one problem. The bond market doesn't believe him. The concern is that the economy won’t be able to handle the loftier rates policymakers have in mind, which limits how far central bankers can raise interest rates and how high Treasury yields can go. Futures on short-term rates are still priced at 1.50% at year-end 2023 and 2024.

With a holiday-shortened week, constant Omnicron headlines, and thinly-staffed trading desks, there could be some high volatility through year-end.
