Your Money

Today was one of those days as stocks all around the world fell sharply. In the US, the S&P 500 was down over 100 points and the Dow down over 1,000.
  • The primary culprit seems to have been the coronavirus news showing more cases outside of China and a fear of spreading.
    • note the market isn't worried so much about the human toll but what impact an epidemic will have on global GDP.  As a crude proxy for growth, the energy sector was today's worst performer down -4.7%.
  • Bernie Sanders continues his front-runner status after easily winning the Nevada caucus.
    • while this certainly isn't the reason for the global decline today, it surely was connected to the -6.3% drop for heathcare providers.  Seems universal healthcare is bad for their business.

Your Life

The aging population trends in the U.S. are a real eyeopener.
According to Joseph F. Coughlin in his book The Longevity Economy, people born in 1900 had a life expectancy of 50 years.  Fast forward to 2015 and life expectancy is 79 years with the centenarian no longer occasional but common.
It’s due, in large part, to better health advancements from medications and treatments to awareness on diet and exercise.  Getting ready for the future can mean preparing for living longer.  So, don’t be surprised if you turn Medicare-age eligible and someone still considers you a kid.
A new phase in your life adventures can just be starting.

Age Trends in America

Complexity Simplified

I was volunteering with a group of mothers from my son’s school.  We were making meals to sell as a fundraiser.  I knew it would be a long day in the kitchen so I turned on the music on my iPhone.  Unfortunately, it wasn’t loud enough to hear above the chatter and kitchen noises.  One of the mothers took my phone and placed it in an empty clean plastic pitcher.  Voila!  Instant speakers loud enough to cut through all the noise so we could enjoy the music!
