Your Money

The global market is experiencing its first down move in quite some time.  The trending buzz word to explain it is Caronavirus, and it has nothing to do with a hangover from Mexican beer.

The flu-like virus originated in central China, has killed dozens and infected thousands.  The outbreak coincides with lunar New Year, which usually plays a huge role in consumption, manufacturing and travel but is being stunted by a rightfully cautious public and government.

Knee-jerk comparisons to SARS are understandable.  In 2003, SARS knocked off 2% points from the Chinese growth numbers ... from 11% to 9%.  In the aftermath, China adopted expansionary fiscal policies to make up for lost growth.

Until this health threat is contained and the economic damage quantified, markets tend to assume the worst.

Your Life

With all the headlines around the coronavirus, I thought it would be helpful to pass along the more pertinent facts and information.

Basically, it started in wildlife markets.  Much of the outbreak was discovered to originate in the Huanan Seafood Market in Wuhan, China.  Don’t be fooled by the name.  The Huanan Seafood Market in Wuhan China sold much more than seafood.  According to a Time magazine article, it also sold a cornucopia of spices, sundries, and wildlife meats like beaver, porcupines, etc.  Eating such meats can be expensive because it is rare.  Some cultures believe it is power to heal certain ailments and boost male potency.

The coronavirus belongs to the same family as SARS and MERS.  Its symptoms are similar to the flu, except there is no shot/cure for this virus.  Eventually, it can lead to a lethal form of pneumonia, and people with compromised immune systems are much more at risk.

There’s currently no need to worry for people outside of China.  Continue to practice good hygiene and health during cold & flu season, like washing hands often; avoid sharing objects, particularly drinks and food; eat right and exercise; try to avoid crowds; get plenty of sleep; etc.

Complexity Simplified

If you've ever thought, "I wish I had a tape measure," this one's for you. There's an Apple app called Measure, and it allows you to measure distances using your phone's camera. I tested on a sheet of 8.5 x 11 piece of paper...magic.
