Your Life
Kindness. This subject bears repeating constantly. As a society, we need reminding of it daily, hourly—not just on holidays or special occasions. Recently, my husband was on a conference call with a client’s attorney. As many of our friends and family know, several years ago, my husband had a vicious battle with cancer, and he won by the Grace of God. However, that battle had scars and lingering effects, including hearing loss. This means it’s harder for him to hear, especially in crowds and over devices such as speaker phones and anywhere with competing noises—which is basically everywhere public. So, during a conference call, my husband asked the attorney if he could take him off speaker phone. The reply was, “No, that’s all I got.” Well, that’s unlikely, and that type of reply, with no further explanation, is meant to shut down any further options. While the guy on the other line didn’t know my husband’s situation, he didn’t need to know.
No one fully understands any situation unless they or someone they care about has experienced that same situation. This is where kindness comes in. You may not know and may not understand, but you can be kind.
