As the article notes, when we hear about elder abuse, we think about other people that take advantage of aging seniors whether physically, mentally, financially, and through neglect. However, did you know elder self-neglect is also elder abuse? As defined by the Elder Justice Act, this is when an elderly person can no longer meet his or her basic activities for daily living (ADLs) due to physical or mental impairment or diminished capacity. It’s a frightening, growing trend and is reported at being 51% of all elder abuse allegations reported…and that’s from those reported. Many go unreported or undetected. The pandemic, which caused (and is still causing) prolonged periods of isolation, has dramatically increased the risk. This article explores how to spot the signs and how to get help.
